Toxic black mold or Stachybotrys is certified mold inspectors about 6% of the time in air samples inside and around 1% of the time in the outdoor signs.
According to literature and according to inspectors experience it grows almost exclusively in very wet cellouse containing materials including paper, carpets, ceiling tiles, and especially on drywall.
This is the most feared of all molds, due to numerous reports, articles Newspaper and magazine articles attributing possible brain damage, infant mortality, expensive property damage and other horrible consequences surrounding the growth in residential environments.
Many fungi produce mycotoxins (toxic chemicals that molds use in a type of microbial warfare). Living things that not possess claws, fangs, or a hard shell to use in self defense or fast legs to escape predators, generally will use camouflage or the production of poisons. This is very common in nature.
In reality, toxic molds like Stachybotrys also known as mold Toxic black and others have to be consumed in mold contaminated foods, or physically handled so that excessive physical contact between human skin and the mold for toxic reactions to develop. At this time most scientists do not believe that inhalation of mold spores can have toxic effects toxic to humans by inhalation at levels commonly found in homes and offices.
Public opinion can not be in support of the declaration above and in the future may find that the above statement is not true and maybe someday we will find that toxic molds cause toxic reactions when inhaled, but currently scientific evidence does not support the view that toxic molds can poison you via inhalation at levels found in indoor environments. Abstract:
Mycotoxins are known to produce veterinary and human diseases when consumed contaminated food. Mycotoxins have also been proposed to cause adverse effects on human health after exposure to inhalation of mold in schools residential indoor and office environments. Epidemiological evidence has been insufficient to establish a causal relationship between indoor mold and nonallergic effects toxigenic health. In this article, the authors model a maximum possible dose of mycotoxins that can be inhaled in 24 h of continuous exposure to high concentrations of mold spores containing the maximum reported concentration of aflatoxins B1 and B2, G and H satratoxins, fumitremorgens B and C verruculogen and trichoverrols A and B. These calculated doses compared to effects data for the same mycotoxins. None of the maximum model were high enough to cause any adverse effects. The model illustrates the inefficiency of delivery of mycotoxins via inhalation of mold spores, suggesting that the lack of association between mold exposure and indoor mycotoxicosis is due to a requirement of very high levels of spores in the air and extended periods of exposure to elicit a response. This model is further proof that human mycotoxicosis are unlikely the following inhalation exposure to mycotoxins in mold-contaminated home, school or office environments. "
Regardless whether toxic mold can poison you with mycotoxins via inhalation, a fact observed by this inspector many times that mold can make some people very ill. Asthma attacks, allergies, sinus infections and mildew seems to be very common. Such conditions in turn can cause people to lose sleep, lose energy and concentration, miss work, and generally feel as if they were being poisoned by mycotoxins.
