Modern Tibet

Modern Tibet
Can I move to the mountains of Tibet and Buddhist forever?

I'm tired of dealing with people, tired of working, tired of playing, tired, generally, of modern life. I've never been in a relationship and I am very depressed at this time of year – from fall to winter. I just need to escape ….

You do not have to move to Tibet and become a Buddhist to get away from everything. You can move to an isolated community in the mountains where you choose, follow what beliefs you choose and drop everything modern. I did that for two years in New Jersey of all places. You have to give up many, including telephone, car, television and all that good stuff. You will have to work hard, manual work, because it is the only type of work you will be able to find. You will have to be ready to go within yourself, because when no one else around, and have read all his books 10 times each, that is all that remains to be do. Depression is a disconnect with the spirit, with the Source. Reconnect on that level where you go and whatever you choose to do. If indeed, exhaust, make sure to realize that not escape you and your life – only where it is now. You will remain the same until you choose to think, feel and change and grow. You can do so at any place. There has to be on top of a mountain.

Long isolated by virtue of its remoteness and its government's suspicion of outsiders, Tibet was drawn a century ago into an uneasy alliance with Great Britain. In the bargain, the British gained a buffer state between its Indian colonies and China, while the Tibetans gained some measure of protection against Chinese encroachment. With the end in 1947 of British rule in India, Tibet was left ...

Excerpt from book: CHAPTER III Short Outline of Tibetan History ? Introduction of Buddhism ? Struggles with China and Mongol Interference ? Growth of Lamaism ? Chinese Administration AM uninterrupted tale of exploration in the wilderness of Tibet, devoid (as Tibetan tales mostly are) of the stirring incidents of personal adventure, would prove but flat and unprofitable reading if they did not lead to a position from which we may form a fair estimate of the present status of Tibetan nationality, and make a rough forecast of the possible future of Tibet in the world of political strategy. But it would take too much space to consider in detail the opinions expressed by each individual traveller and to compare their impressions seriatim. It will be more useful to gather them at once into one collective whole, and to give a short summary of the existing form of government in Tibet and of its evolution, before we follow further the lines of modern exploration. We shall at least incidentally explain the position of some of those Tibetan functionaries with unpronounceable names who are so frequently referred to in the records of Tibetan travel. The history of Tibet is the history of a country which, like India, has never lately been able to claiman integral nationality amongst the nations of the world. Foreign domination, either in Mongol or Chinese form, is invariably to be recognised, and it need be no matter of surprise to us if Tibetan traditions point to a final domination which is neither Mongol nor Chinese, but European. We are indebted to Prin- sep, Kosma de Coros, Schlagentweit, and Sarat Chandra Das for the earliest records which may be called historical, including lists of kings dating from legendary beginnings (about the fifth century B. c.) to the end of the monarchy in 914 A. Resistance And Reform In Tibet Resistance And Reform In Tibet
$12

Much writing about Tibet and especially on Tibetan responses to Chinese communist rule has been sentimental and highly polemical. Also, many publications on recent development have been based on travellers' accounts. This volume adopts a more balanced and rigorous analytical approach to modern Tibetan society. Questions of identity and ethnicity in Tibet and the character and course of the anti-Chinese protests since 1987 are principal themes. Earlier history, ideology, economic development and China's post-1980 reforms are also examined.

Resistance and Reform in Tibet Resistance and Reform in Tibet
$29.88

Tibet exerts a powerful fascination far beyond its borders. Given its very remoteness and the all-encompassing character of Tibetan Buddhism, it has been the setting for countless works of romance, adventure and fantasy. Yet relatively few writers have studied Tibet as an evolving, contemporary society, despite the fact that for the last forty years this nation of over 5 million people has been confronting a dual challenge more critical than any other since the 'dark ages' of the tenth century: surviving Chinese Communism and confronting modernity. This book describes the character of that struggle. Identity, ethnicity, nationalism and the course of political protest since 1987 are principal themes, while religious iconography, the role of Buddhist nuns and monks and China's post-1980 reforms in Tibet are also discussed. The contributors include Tibetans and Chinese as well as Western experts, hence this is far from being a traditional 'Eurocentric' view of what Tibetans think and feel. Resistance and Reform in Tibet reveals the emergence of a distinctive, modern Tibetan society and the sophistication, creativity and resourcefulness of its people's responses to Chinese domination. Tibet today reflects a rich mixture of traditional and innovative strategies in a nation's struggle for survival.
