Do people in Asia feel insulted when described as "oriental"? If so, why?

The East is a mass geographical ground to describe Turkey, Afghanistan, China, Malaysia, Japan and Persia. The term "oriental" denotes the style or culture of that particular landmass. There is no such thing as a race of "Oriental" or "Oriental" tribe or "Oriental" language. There are screens oriental lamps. Rugs Oriental rug. Oriental spices. But there is no Oriental people.

Well I noticed that he prefers the term "Asian" and now I hear "Oriental" is offensive. However, I think it's fair that words change over time. 50 years ago it was acceptable to refer to a black (or African American), as a black or colored person. Certainly not say that now. The word "black" or "color" while not a racial slur or plane seems offensive to date and reminds us of another era where people of that ethnic group were treated differently than they are now. You may hear the word "Oriental" carries the same connotations for the people of Asia.
