Why is my dog scratching / scratching my carpet and rugs?

I have a two year old female red nose American pit bull that was sterilized 2 weeks ago and since then it constantly scratching the carpet, carpet, and any other similar material. My two dogs used to do this from time to time (as a once a month) and my cats do in their blocks of notes, but my mouth is doing this all day, every time I turn around. Please someone explain the nature of this behavior so that I can help if possible.Thanks
